Running C&C Generals on Windows 7

The original C&C Generals has been released in 2003, a time where nobody was actually thinking about Windows Vista and Windows 7. So it shouldn’t be a big surprise that there can be some problems installing the original Generals on a modern OS like Windows 7. This blog entry is addressing the most common problems that you can experience while trying to install and run the game.

Install C&C Generals / Zero:Hour on Windows 7
Start your windows explorer and open the install CD/DVD with it. Right click on setup.exe and select Properties. Switch to the Compatibility tab and select as compatibility mode “Windows XP Service Pack 3” and set the check box “Run this program as an administrator”. Click OK to save the changes.

After the installation is complete, you need to update the game to the newest version available. The latest patch for Generals is Version 1.8. The latest Zero:Hour update is Version 1.04. Download those patches for your installed game language – You should start the downloaded update file as an administrator (Right click on the .exe and select Run as administrator). If you’re using The First Decade to install Generals and or Zero:Hour, you need to install the The First Decade patch instead of the mentioned updates above – The First Decade installation files are already updated!

Run C&C Generals / Zero:Hour on Windows 7
Go to your install directory and set the compatibility and “Run as administrator” settings for the generals.exe in the same way as mentioned above for the setup.exe! Start the game – Don’t worry if you’re receiving an error. We can fix that! Go into your Documents folder (C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\) and you should be able to see a folder “Command and Conquer Generals Data” and or “Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data”. Browse into the folder and do a right click into the empty space -> New -> Text Document. Open it with a notepad and copy the following text into it:
