Not the first command and conquer game I played but surely the greatest in my opinion, even if it wasn't strategic like red alert 2. Tank spam ftw.

I agree. It will forever be my favorite C&C game.
And you could more than tank spam against the AI in skirmish and the campaigns.

All C&C's (except for 4) are my favorite! It's like choosing your favorite kid; you can't pick one! Anyways, nothing beats listening to Stalin's rants.

RA1 is so great that it has some of the best things from both the Red Alert and Tiberium Series.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/73/Kane_with_Stalin.jpg

Do any of you play red alert 1 competitively/online? We should try to get a huge online match going... I never played online when I was a child.

Well, some people play it on cncnet (http://cncnet.cnc-comm.com/).

Red Alert was the first C&C game I had ever owned. It's what brought me into the genre and is more or less my favorite.

Allies for the win!
Ah, Command and Conquer: Red Alert. My first non-Civ game. Forever etched into my soul as a glorious example of exactly what a game should be.
Long campaigns! Enemies that are polar opposites of each other! Naval warfare! Gap Generators and Chronospheres! Maps that show you how the war is progressing! (catch that "long campaigns" part?)
Now that I'm older and have played more games, I understand that RA isn't perfect, but even so, I still find myself drawn back every once in a while to stomp Stalin into the ground. (And I've still never played the Soviet campaign)
And I still despise Tanya.

My most favourite C&C game, or any game really, since I was ever introduced to RTS.

Best game in the C&C world.
No, best game in the world.
I loved the mine layers... Nothing in gaming has ever ever come close to matching the feeling you get when your opponent thinks he's a pro because he can build lots of tanks - and then he looses them ALL on your mine field because you're awesome.
Anyways, I would pay $50 for a 3D clone of this game with proper hotkeys and online play and ladders. It was the best game ever. =)

I concur.
I forget how much I rely on hotkeys and buildqueues now until I go back in time.

I abbsolutelly love this game, but I have this problem, that I have TFD I would like to do my own maps, but it just gives me this message: "Please insert Red Alert CD-rom into the CD-rom drive."
Is there any way to get that Map generator working without disc?
And yes, it rules big time, I have also RA 3, but it is boring compared to this one.

We have a First Decade forum here, and its sticky Common Problems thread exists for a reason. I suggest you read it through instead of hijacking an unrelated thread.
And no, adding "and yes, it rules" at the end does not make your post on topic.

Wow, a current forum about RA!
Love the game and still play it in skirmish mode whenever I'm bored, just played a round then.
RA rules for sure.
If there's water, then allies and cruisers are the name of the game, lining up tank/apc/tank/apc etc with a few turrets for defence and artillery behind them.
If no water, then russia with strong defences (tesla coils and flame throwers), and 7 airfields and MIGs to bomb buildings to oblivion.
RA1 is my favourite game. I used to prefer C&C1, I bought my first PC just to play C&C1, (didn;t even want a PC until I saw C&C1), but it's mainly RA1 that has the most fun units and highest replay value.

Oh you have yet to figure out the power of the Longbow :D
High resistance to rockets and dealing a lot of damage. 8 of those can take out a con. yard FAST and survive too. Just repair and go at it again.

They hover around too much. Big pain if AA or rocket soldiers about.
Try 7 migs, if unlucky one may be damaged, but still get home. If not too much AA (3 migs will take out AA with no damage near the building being targeted before hand anyway if you want to limit the chance of losing a mig during a strike). After that it's a quick fly by, no hanging around taking hits.
The longbow sometimes just hovers around aimlessly maneuvering into position, hitting nothing, just getting hit. They even do it when out of ammo too!
edit: after I take out the construction yard, barracks are the next thing, to stop them training more rocket men. ;)
Every time I've been allies with longbows, they are easy to take out with a few rocket men or AA. MIGs are harder to hit due to their speed on attack.

Only the Allies AA gun is actually effective against them TBH. SAM's and rockets do very little damage against them which means them hovering over the target releasing their ammo doesn't mean much. You will rarely lose any...at least I don't.

Don't really happen to me TBH. Well they do it when getting into position, but that's it and they certainly never do it when out of ammo since they are on the way back at that point.
BTW not saying the MiG's aren't good because they are. My favorite unit actually. Just that when you are playing as allies on a land map, they are very good to use. The Allies aren't all about cruisers.

Great game! It was this C&C that ignited my interest in the multiplayer aspect of C&C. I insured that I got a small home network set-up just so that there was always an option to play vs.
Despite how remorseless the tank spam was, there was still quite a bit going on in terms of tactics. Also the importance of both early scouting, and denying an early scout was vital when playing an evenly matched player.
Red Alert was also the start of my dislike for Westwood expansions. Red Alert aftermath was that bad in multiplayer (in the opinion of my lan group) that we uninstalled it, and left Red Alert updated to 'Counterstrike' (for the extra maps).
