View Full Version : What do you think of Portal 2's in-game store?

If you didn't know already, Portal 2 has it's own in-game store, like TF2 does, for goodies and stuff. Currently all it has is little decorations like hats and stuff to put on your co-op character (prices IMO are a little pricey :/ ).

Anyways, would you like to see new test chambers, mods, other stuff added to this store in the future?

Anyways, though I didn't like most of the prices for the items, I just had to get a few things for my P-body.

Now he looks like villain from old western film! :D

This store thing is the saddest thing Valve has ever done. Overpricing a few pixels on your character that don't add any value to the gameplay. If you think portal 2 item prices are high, guess what valve tipped it by asking 17 euro for a small teddybear in TF2.

I'm sorry but imo if you buy these things you might as well just give money to the devs without getting anything in return. It is things like this that allow devs to get easy money without spending time to actually make a quality game. Whiles Valve did an excellent job on Portal 2 (and on TF2) this kind of marketstrategy is poisoning their minds, already they created an oversaturation of items and hats in TF2, because of this and shamelessly overpricing items, many of which even cost more than the whole Orange Box itself! This is no longer fun, this is annoying. It's turning into an expensive fashion contest instead of a game.

Also P-body is a she.

microtransactions in a 60$ game? that's horrible !

i can understand it on FTP game because that's the only way of income for the developers but full 60$ games like portal already get most of it income from direct sales ( wich im assuming are a lot since portal is so popular) so why this "in game store" even exist?

Micro-transactions should have been added later not on launch.

I have no problems with micro transactions so long as things aren't being cut from the game just to pump the customer even more later. So charging for superfluous extras like these is fine by me, since they're not made into a necessity for gameplay, and they're easily ignored.

Portal 2 is becomingly looking like a MMO Puzzle game with micro-transactions and other elements that needs to be paid as DLC. Unacceptable!

Valve is becomingly acting like Activision and Infinity Ward lately, too overpriced for a Half-Life 2 add-on that lasted even shorter than Modern Warfare 2.

Best 2011 PC game of the year despite the high ratings? **** that.

I went through the store. At first I thought it wasn't real money they were asking for. I thought it was another subdued joke... asking so much money for such insignificant things... so I tested it by putting something in my cart and clicking checkout. To my surprise they were actually asking for real money.

WAY too expensive for something so insignificant. There is no possible way that I'd buy anything in that store.

^this, the only excuse TF2 has is that it's been around for 4 years and may not be making enough money to justify continued updates so it has to get some cash flow going somehow

Not justify? TF2 sold very well and has a strong community.

Besides that Valve has an off the charts revenue thanks to Steam.

Why do they still need to sell such insignificant items at such a price?

I'm not paying for mods, mods should be free

i meant to continue support of TF2

besides, in business it's usually a bad idea to prop up a failing product or business with money from somewhere else

Yeah, right. Even Desura and Indie DB has changed everything about free mods into payable mods.

Portal 2 looks more like another Half-Life 2 mod than a game itself, really.

What's funny is that for years, that's all Microsoft did with their Xbox/Entertainment division. They were bleeding red, and MS kept them floating with money from Windows and Office, lol.

Not rly, Portal 2 singleplayer is over 8x longer than Portal 1 and I haven't included the co-op with that.

It has added a lot of new stuff to gameplay, graphics and story, the puzzles are more diverse and harder.

Whiles potatoes might not create the same hype cake did, the game sure proofed that Valve can still pull it off. Portal 2 is a more serious yet it has gotten funnier aswell.

But then again it's all about choice. If you weren't fond of Portal you won't be that excited bout Portal 2. To me it was more to see if Valve could top the succes of Portal and if they haven't gotten rusty. Shame on me for ever doubting them. It is almost heretical of me.

After working on my cousins computer and trying out his Portal 2 copy I have to say something is off on the PC version. I saw console references and it's like someone got lazy and ported the darn game to PC. Other than that it's an okay game from what I played of it.

Yeah, I know, right? There's was some thing explaining this, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Anyways, stuff in the store is overpriced, and it stinks that there's only co-op to show it off in.

He probably meant there should have been some kind of competitive MP mode with many players to show those awesome hats and skins off!

Then I suggest he should go play TF2, cuz lately all everybody does there is show off their crap and trade, instead of playing the game.

Someone needs to lighten up a little and stop being serious. What Slayer probably meant is Portal 2 could have used an MP mode in which portals were used in sort of a death match like fashion and to bait players until they're suckered into the wrong portal but it does sound good on paper but how it translates into a game is another story.

Ok I just played a bit of co-op with a mate and it is godlike. Especially when both use a mic.

Yeah, my brother and I tried co-op yesterday. It's totally insane. This is probably one of the best game sequels ever made. Definitely in the running for game of the year.

This is what I meant. I want to make a mod that does this, but balance/level design will be tough.

That's one proof why some people realized that Portal 2 for the PC is ported from the video game console in the first place. We thought Portal 2 was developed straight out from the PC.
