Check for deadly australian living stuff first. Maybe some spider killed your PC.

theres plenty of webs in there since I wanst able to maintain it for 2 weeks, and my power button is broken, so I jerry- rigged my own power switch to it.

it switches on, starts to boot, but then gives me a hardware failure indicator. I cant visually check it since my videocard doesnt seem to be working.

the whole rig is just over 2 years old, so I wouldn't be surprised if it is something like my video card that failed

Just a wild guess ...

well now I managed to get it to apparently boot in a stable condition, but the videocard appears to be fried. Fire Truck!

When you start replacing the video card make sure no matter if it's NVIDIA or AMD that the card you get has it's GPU wafer die correctly mounted or you will be asking for an immediate RMA. I went through 2 MSI 560GTX-Ti cards and my dad went through 2 AMD 6970 cards all because the GPU die wasn't seated correctly and the cards ended up shortening themselves out.

Watch out for the latest cards when you get to picking one.

my pc would choke on the awesomeness of a high end card. its loaded with a humble 4850 that has lasted 2 years of me abusing it through overclocking

Yes it's possible. They're wide ranging complaints for NVIDIA and AMD products not being produced up to par. MSI, HIS and XFX had to recall their first revisions of the 6970 cards due to lack of thermal paste on the chip and the cooling unit was not on correctly exposing some key components. Other AMD products had similar stuff adjusted but it was done silently. For NVIDIA, MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA and a few others had similar problems with the 560 GTX Ti, 570, and 580 cards. If the GPU die is not correctly mounted on any GPU then you risk shorting out the cards.
