Noticed that MG on the EU tank in the trailer. I REALLY hope tanks will be able to hose infantry down. It was silly how hard tanks fail against infantry in the original generals.

two thumbs up if that MG works. Three thumbs if tanks can switch between AP and HE shells.

Perhaps the mg can shoot, it would be great, but maybe not switching between different shells.

Switching shells in tanks would be excellent, maybe make HE and sabot rounds as upgrades.

Ok the infantry can jump onto the tank then throw an grenade inside...

Tanks have these things called cannons. and it can kind of shoot further then most people can jump :D

Too complex for a game

if all tanks have machine guns then infantry becomes rubbish

No, infantry are useful because tanks have very poor sights and does very badly in urban environments.
Infantry are eyes and ears of armor. Not wearing 50 tons of metal helps in that regard.

Also it's hard to hide a tank. It's hard to order an air strike against a single infantryman.

But this is an RTS then where can infantry hide in

Building?

buildings and woods, ruse did the hiding in woods thing right.
or you can just make all infantry automatically stealthy, and your own infantry is the only way to spot them :D

RTS is having a coconut effect on people's perception of weapons :D

Realism does not always make a game better and this is IMO certainly one of those cases. It would mess up the countersystem and make infantry next to useless. All you could do to stop tanks is to build more tanks yourself or have some aircraft help take them out. One of the things that made G1 so good was that TH's etc. where good at destroying tanks, but where weak against any MG based weapon and that should stay the same.

Realism >>> Balance
Just look at BF3 and how it fails

For balance reasons, we can have infantry in squads and give the gun small damage. That way the tanks will look cool when shooting their MGs, and will fend off single soldiers, but won't do much against two squads.

Perhaps they can make it a costly per-unit upgrade to balance it like they did with the Overlord Gattling Gun in G1. Plus a lot of Mods successfully made tanks with optional machine guns to use and they seemed to work out well in this fashion.

Besides, it could just be aesthetic, like the gun port or like smoke grenade launchers.

Real vehicles have them.

Well, I'm not sure about real tanks, But in CoD and such when a tank driver pops out to shoot at me, well, I mess up their day.
I'm sure by 2030 they will have guns on top again for tank commanders, but I would be willing to be they can be remote controlled from inside the vehicle.
I like the idea of a per unit upgrade.

The Battlemaster in Generals had a machine gun/rocket launcher (?) on top that was non-functional:

Most mods make the machine gun workable, but really, it's only useful against a lone Red Guard/Ranger/Rebel, otherwise that would screw up the balance. You're better off just crushing them.

Yes, just for looks, but don't forget balance!!!

Switching might be a bit problematic, but a functional MG on a tank is a great thing if true.
