  • Other New C&C game should not be using EA's Origin program

    #1
    Subject:
A new C&C game should not be using EA's new service program called Origin in order to run the game.

    Description:
All C&C games are supposed to be independent from other programs with the exception of recent C&C games using Steam. After reading EA's news about it, I found out it's a similar version of Steam. Adding that with this, C&C should be a independent SP game under those circumstances.

    Positives:
C&C is to be the way it was distributed, installed and run independently, making some players happy. The only exceptions are inputing serial numbers and activation in the Internet.

    Negatives:
Could impact a lot of people not wanting to install a service program due to DRM and other issues.

Straight up, if every publisher wanted to do their own online distributin service, i would very quickly switch to consoles or stop playing videogames entirely. Imagine if activision wanted their own client, then ubisoft, then popcap... you get the idea. I'd have 50 client running in the background just to play my games.

Fine, if EA wants me to PURCHASE the game through origin i will, but let my put my game serial into steam and manage it there and have it on my account there. Steam is where i already have all my games and i'm not going to use a client where i only get titles from one publisher.

That's just stupid. The games should all support auto sync of saved games and progress under any and every client no matter who it is and interoperability with the same title from other clients, straight up. And one service should not be priced to force people onto the publisher's client.

Just because Valve is a publisher and distributor doesn't mean EA should as well. The only way i would be happy with EA getting into distribution is if all the distributors came up with a way for me to take my content, my games from one client to another with no hassles and no issues with full support of the games, aka automatic game patching and community support etc...

I wouldn't mind having to use origin if I want to buy and install the game via the origin store, but installing the game from a disc copy and that requiring origin for the game to run...No way. A game needs to run by itself. Why do I need a "console" to run it, on PC?

          This.

Why make it complicated with a steam-like "console", whereas installing a disk and running it afterwards has never been an issue?

I just bought a copy of SupCom 2 (when priced at $15 on the shelf, it felt like I was stealing it lol) but after I had installed the game AND installed steam, it had to install again for whatever reason, making the time to even get the game up and running about 2 hours after I had unboxed it.

Sure it's only on the first install, and it does provide great social applications and support, but is all that^^^ really necessary?

I like Origin.. or Steam. Can't remember the last time I've installed a new game from the disk... has to be about 2 years ago.
Also it's very good if you live in Germany. Most of the games are censored to a good amount or having a bad sync and you save yourself the trouble importing them from the UK.

I like my games from the DVD/CD not from the net(Steam,Origin...).With no need of a connection.Just the CD and a printed manual. No virtual manual or such stuff.

You don't need to run origin to play your games. It is only a download platform. It is different from steam in this sense.

I have been very disappointed with the current upswing in needs steam or a retail system to play games. What if I lose internet connection...due to weather, or poweroutages...and I am playing on a labtop...can't play the game...because it requires internet connection. I would rather have it CD-ROM. Now I understand the problem of "friend sharing" a game, maybe lowering the costs of initial sales may increase volume and more players will have a copy. Whereas, a high cost initial game spawns "friend sharing" and torrent hackers...because its too costly. And some of the recent CnC games topped out at start on shelves at $60-50 bucks. And in some areas...some of the CnC4 and RA3 disks still hold high costs...even after about year. Now they have dropped to $19.99. Nearly 66%-80% devaluation from initial start prices.

Probably some of the hacking is also revenge hacking of EA, for DRM and perceived ruining of game series. Now if EA can figure out ways to either lower costs, or promote games with a proper gamer support system, it would be useful, and would increase sales. I understand that rock bottom games at 19.99 or lower is a little insensitive to the workers, coders, and artists of the game...but could middle cost like $30.00 dollars be enough to turn the rates and volume particularly at opening day? Because extreme costs at $60 caught alot of flak.

I want a good old DVD to install my games. Internet connection to activate the game is ok but after that it must be possible to play offline. And for the german release: don't censore or change anything and put the originalsynchro on the disc, too.

I agree that any future C&C games shouldn't have to be connected to the internet. I think it should just be a one time connection. When you are in the process of installing the game you just need to verify the game through the internet in order to activate it.

Otherwise what if this was a feature. You can choose to play it offline but as soon as you quit the game, your stats or any achievement you earned will be sent to the main servers to update your info. That way you could still keep your stats but it would upload them after you finish playing.

While Origin is a download platform, it's also social networking. I really don't think Social Networking for C&C would be very good, unless it was like the CNC4 beta launcher, which would allow you to browse the forum on it.
