  • Using units special ability in group selection

    #1
    Hi!

Sorry if this has been asked before, don't know how to specify the question I am about to ask, as short and understandable as possible in "Search" option!

If there are people here who have played Warcraft 3. When you select 12 caster units, lets say witch doctors, and want to use their "Heal totem" special ability, pressing the shortcut key or just using the mouse, will make only one unit from the selection to cast the totem (it will be the unit closest to the target you have designated). So if you want 5 healing totems, you had to press 5 times.

In C&C3, when I have several units of the same type selected, and want to use their special ability, ALL UNITS selected will use their special ability on the target or ground position I've designated. Here is the thing, I do NOT want for all of them to use their special ability, I only want one unit from the same unit group selection, to use their special ability per one button press.

Here is the example: I want to destroy five GDI's power plant using Black Hand's "plant explosive" special ability.
I have 50 Black hand units. To destroy the power plant, I only need to use 3 units per plant. To do so, I have to click each unit individually, or select only 3 of them, and use their special ability on one power plant and repeat the steps for the rest of them. When I select all 50 units and use their special ability, all 50 of them will target one power plant. I do not want all of them to target the same building, what I would like is only one unit in group selection of 50, to use its special ability for one button press. That would mean, if I have 50 units selected, and want to destroy 5 power plants, I would only need to press keyboard shortcuts CTRL+D and target the power plants 15 times. For each button press, only 1 unit will move from the selection and target the building. So 3 units per building times 5 buildings is 15.

Another example, Vertigo bombers. I have 12 of them, and I have ordered them to attack. During the attack, 4 of them are getting damaged and if I want them to stay alive, I have to pull them back. In order to do so, I have to select each unit separately and click the CTRL+A keyboard shortcut or select all 4 of them by holding SHIFT and catching them on the screen as they fly. By the time I do it, i manage to safe one of them, while the 3 of them gets destroyed. I've noticed there is a way to highlight units that are already in group selection, by click SHIFT and left mouse click on the unit in the selection. However, when I press the CTRL+A, instead of returning only 4 units highlighted back to base, all 12 of them are getting back.

Is there a mod which can fix this? If not, can some1 tell how hard would it be to make one

no, its not possible to mod such interface/command changes

but remember you can also use the contextual tab (the tab on the right which shows the unit icons of selected units) for managing group selections:

    1) double left-click the unit icon on the contextual tab to select 1 particular unit from the selected group

so if you select 50 shadows and want to only dispatch 1 shadow for a powerplant, double left-click its icon on the right, and issue the command.

i wouldnt recommend this method for such use though... its very inefficient and slow, so in most cases its better to select the units manually

    2) right-click the unit icon on the contextual tab to remove units from the selection.
    an example of this:

[ugh, youtube embedding on these forums is fucking retarded]

this second method is actually quite useful in most situations for splitting groups for multiple targets, and i think also works well for your shadows vs pp example:
    - select your 50 shadows
    - order group to attack a pp
    - remove 3 shadows from the selection by right-clicking 3 icons
    - order this group to attack 2nd pp
    - remove 3 shadows again from the selection
    - order this group to attack 3rd pp
    - remove 3 shadows again from selection and issue a move command away from the pp's to prevent them from attacking anything

this way youll end up with 3 shadows attacking each of the 3 pp's (3x3 = 9 shadows), and the remaining 41 shadows not attacking

only issue is ofcourse, that you need to do all this quickly before they attack - so best recommended when the shadows are a good distance away from the targets

      Thank you for a reply!

I am familiar with all the attack methods you've described! However, this (current) type of command interface is not "friendly" for those who want to fast micro units and execute their special abilities in really short time frame. I am not saying it is not possible, it is just extremely difficult cause of way the commands work in group selection.

I hope someone someday with proper knowledge will notice this flaw and try to get around it.

I also hope C&C Generals 2 will not use current control/command scheme
