I'm going to the Vancouver Art Institute for game art and design, so that would easily qualify me, alongside the work I will have done by that time on the side.
Well, that depends on what you do in your studies as well as your side projects. You are, however, starting off the right way; just don't get complacent in thinking that you will be good just by going to the Art Institutes (have a number of buds in SF and Chicago), Gnomon, Animation Mentor, VFS, DAVE, Full Sail, Ringling and others that you qualify. It takes a ton of work, and chances are you won't score level-design right out of school (unless you're John Carmack good). If you do get into the industry, you'll be a tester, as so many people go to school and apply for the more popular jobs (designers, art-artists, animators, programmers) that decent people are a dime-a-dozen. If you really want to hop on a AAA title fresh outta school, go for something more specialized like technical artist (me in VFX/film/medical), rigging/ weight map artist, MoCap manager, lighter, shader artist, et al.

That said, I don't think it's the right time for a new Renegade. To get the franchise rebooted and up and running again, you have to go back to the bread-n-butter (ie: RTS PC titles). Both WW and EALA fell short when they tried to branch out, and I fear another FPS iteration at such a critical time would kill any chance the franchise has with this revitalization. Love Renegade, but I don't a sequel can recapture the magic in the bottle any time soon.

Guys, you know, Renegade was a financial failure for Westwood.
Live well. It is the greatest revenge... And be the salt and light of Earth.

I can't see Victory Games taking any risks with an FPS C&C game to be fair. As I remember reading somewhere that the new studio was committed to developing new RTS C&C titles.

Keep watching to the community for C&C FPS games. Apocalypse Rising, Renegade X, A Path Beyond and CnC Reborn have plenty of FPS action on the way.

we can hope that one day a new renegade rises from the ashes, but it isn't likely to happen

I really enjoyed Renegade. FPS's have evolved into a mass multiplayer genre. And a game based on an RTS really has to get creative in getting players and maps to recreate the desired feel. A bind-to-cover button would come in handy for making hot spots more realistic and usable. Maps have to be carefully developed to create battle hot spots at key features of the map.

My love for C&C died at Tiberium Wars, it was the last game I bought and I was very disappointed. I didn't like how the only connection it had to the original was Kane. It did a good job picking up where Tiberian Sun left off, but what happened to the oppressed Forgotten? The Mutant Huts were hardly a worthy addition. Frank Klepacki's music was also a need for the game's theme. I felt like I was playing a WW2 game when going into battle when I should have been reminded of the eerie post-apocalyptic feel left by Tiberian Sun. (Thanks for realizing this in RA3, I have yet to buy it though)

I wouldn't want another botched C&C Title, and I think the game should take either a Red Alert or Tiberian Sun theme. Keep Frank Klepacki for the music, and make the AI more interactive. Make me dependent on my comrades! Half-Life 2 does a great job of this in the later chapters. And Cross-Platform functionality, if/when this gets released the fanbase will be much bigger and games will be a lot more in depth with an army of Xbox, Playstation, and PC gamers all at once. As for single player, lets not have a Gun-ho Hoah-hoah all American badass. How about some character flaws or some traits that make Havok more tolerable.

Thats my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

You know, if Victory Games are exclusively dedicated to RTS C&Cs, then I don't see an issue if another developer took control of a C&C in a different genre, such as an FPS.

The only potential problem with that is if the FPS game is a spinoff of a strategy game made by Victory Games. In which case, there would need to be some supervision on the creation of the story line to make sure it all makes sense, canon wise.

I'd love a new FPS but I don't think it's time, VG gotta build up their reputation and restore the good name of C&C before they can dare venture into other genres.

If anything, DICE should make a "Battlefield Tiberium" of sorts once Battlefield 3 is out. It'd probably be much better if DICE - who we know is very capable of making a good team-based FPS - was at the helm. I want to see what Victory can do with an RTS C&C before we trust them enough to make something even styled after Renegade.
