I cannot say directly what holds up freeware releases for C&C but it's part of the problem. So let's try this. What is the difference between C&C games and a game say like Doom. If you think about it long and hard and look at both games then you might find the answer in the long run.

Sorry for the bump but with Generals 2 upcoming, I bet RA2/YR will be released as a promotion?
    Is it?

Releasing RA2 for free would make irrelevant the buying of the first half of the first decade. But, then again, since you also get Generals and Renegade anyway, it's still worth the twenty dollars.

C&C Generals for freeware is more likely to happen than RA2/YR.

You know what they should release as freeware? Sole Survivor. That game was ahead of its time, man.

Alternatively, they should just put the whole C&C franchise on GOG.com. I'd even pay for the freeware titles if I could get them DRM-free with the expansions and GOG's slick installer (and the original DOS version of C&C).

Pure wishful thinking would be to have Generals and ZH released as freeware but have it enhanced to work on VISTA and Win7 without needing to use the workarounds.

Sole Survivor is not possible otherwise it would have been included with "The First Decade" package.

TD, RA1 and TS were released without these enhancements.

Why wouldn't it be possible? I'll have to try the Understorm LAN patch on it, and if it became freeware, either XWIS or CnCNet would take care of the online servers.
