There is a mac version of the game.

Guys have you installed the patches? I'm pretty sure there are mac specific ones.
I brandish my keyboard like a diamond edged sword of justice, piercing it through the skulls of forum trolls and the misinformed masses. This is why I am still single.

Unfortunately, the "Check for updates" button just brings me to the latest posts in the EA Forum! If anyone can point me to the right place, I would be grateful.

Meanwhile, EA replied, but nothing useful to solve the problem. In any case, as promised, here is what they wrote.

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts.

Firstly, please allow me to express my gratitude for your interest in C&C 3 Tiberium Wars. I assure you, I'll try my best to ensure you get to play these games as soon as possible.

If you have a variety of programs running in the background on your computer, they may be using a considerable amount of system resources. Closing these unnecessary background processes will help boost system performance in your game, as well as free up system resources which may be conflicting with the game.
    1. From the Finder menu open the Go menu and select Utilities.
    2. Open the Activity Monitor program.
    3. In the top right cornor, make sure the My Processes option is selected from the pull down menu.
    4. Highlight the programs listed one at a time and click the Quit Process button in the top left.
    5. When the confirmation window appears select Force Quit to close the program.
    6. Repeat those steps until only the following four are listed:
    Dock
    Finder
    LoginWindow
    Activity Monitor
Note: there will be other programs that either will not close, or will re-appear after being closed. Those processes can be skipped.
    7. Close the activity monitor and attempt to run the game.

Be aware that this is only a temporary change, restarting the system will restore it to the default state. If closing these programs helps resolve performance issues you may want to go through them one by one to narrow down which program is causing the conflict.

However,Can you also please try uninstalling the game and reinstalling it under a different MAC admin account.
    1) Delete the "[Game Name]" icon from your Applications folder.
    2) Delete the additional files can found in /Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/[Game Name] Preferences/p_drive, including your saved games.

    Creating a new user account:
    1) Click on the Apple Menu select System Preferences.
    2) From the View menu, select Accounts.
    3) You may need to click the Padlock icon to allow changes.
    4) Click the + icon to create a new account.
    5) Log into the new user account and reinstall the game.

However,Please follow the below mentioned steps to back up your saved data:
Open a 'Finder' window by clicking on the 'Finder' icon on your Dock (looks like a blue smiley face).
From your 'Finder' window, open your 'Documents' folder (should be listed on the left-hand side of your 'Finder' window).

    Open the 'Electronic Arts' folder.
Open the 'The Sims 3' folder.
Select the 'Saves' folder by clicking on it once.
Press the 'Command/Apple' and 'C' keys on your keyboard.
Navigate to the place where you wish to save your backup copy of your saved games.
Press the 'Command/Apple' and 'V' keys on your keyboard to paste your saved games backup folder. We recommend re-naming your folder to include the words 'Sims 3,' 'Saves,' or 'backup' to avoid confusion. If you need to replace your saved games, simply replace your 'Saves' folder in the location below, but make sure you rename your backup folder as 'Saves.'

    However,Run the Apple updater and see if there are any new updates for your OSX;
    1) Click on the Apple Menu.
    2) Click on "Software Update…".
    3) The Mac will check for updates. Click install and follow the on screen instructions to install and updates found.

EA got back to me again - no immediate good news - here is the reply

(I found the patches but they did not help - they are all pre-Lion & already included in the copy I have)

Thank you for contacting Electronics Arts again.

I appreciate your emails pointing out the lacuna in the game installation process. Any further news in this regard? I can run far more advanced software than this already, it's a shame that the program doesn't work.

I have also patched to 1.09 as instructed, but the program doesn't launch past the splash screen, requiring me to force quit the application before trying something else.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I am using a brand new MacBook Pro 15" with Lion installed.
