You could just use the trial of Sony Vegas, although if you want a more simple piece of editing software I can gladly suggest Camtasia Studio.

No, only for 30 days. I don't think there is really any good free video editing software unless you're using a Mac.

Sony Vegas PRO for advanced video editing with everything you need to create a masterpiece.
Adboe Premiere is good but not as good as Sony Vegas, lack of good fx and features.

Adobe After Effects is actually great, but its mostly for motion action videos where you need lasers and video fx.

Vegas is great. Some other great competitiors: Adobe Premiere, Avid (when combined with Avid hardware, the BEST editing platform bar-none), Final Cut Pro, and Autodesk Smoke

After Effects isn't actually a video editor. It's a compositor and there's a whole slew of software that is in that area like Autodesk Combustion and Flame, Apple Motion, NukeX, Fusion, Toxic, and Shake

Well After Effects isn't really a video editor, yes but still with it you can create amazing videos, 3D with tons of fx.
Vegas on the otherhand doesn't have that good 3D and fx editing like in after effects but other than that the possiblity is limitless.
