Hello I also have a problem with the launcher.
    - I've installed the game and Download Manager and newest .net. I click the start icon (from menu start). Then, system asks me to approve the Launcher. I choose to approve and nothing happens. I simply cannot launch the game.
    - Polish version

    Hi guys,

Bought this game thrue EA store, since i finally have a great laptop, thought could run C&C 4 with all bells and whistles on.
    Asus 2nd gen Core I 7 740QM 1.73 ghz with 4 gb ram, 1 gb ATI HD5730 vid card, Windows 7 64 bit , Frameworks 4.0 Net

And thats what the problem is, 64 bit Win 7 , cant run in Xp mode either tho, find this very #$%^%^%# ,most older games which doesnt run on 64 bit win, can run in compability mode ....

Is there another launcher which SUPPORTS 64 bits operator systems?

    cheers,

    cheers,
64-bit is not your problem. Make sure all your drivers are up to date including video drivers. Make sure to update your DirectX Run-time drivers too. Make sure Windows is up to date as well.

    Hi CnC4 Community,

Ran into Launcher Errors myself, while being on a Win7 64-bit platform. Contacted EA Support, and got escalated to Tier 3 support, as no working solution (nor an explanation as to why it was happening) was available.

I have already done what other folks have done (like setting compatibiility, or running as Admin), but without success, before contacting EA support.

Got tired of waiting after several exchanges with support, so I did some probing, theorizing, and testing.

Here's a copy of my final reply to EA support of how I fixed the issue. Might be useful to some folks encountering Launcher errors, as I've tried to probe the underlying cause of the Launcher errors. However, you will need to have patience and read this.

Or just skip to the TLDR portion.

    ---------------------------------------------
    Dear EA Support Team,

I'm happy to report that I finally licked this issue after some tests.

    >>>> Full Version:
I was able to discover that the CNC4LauncherUpdate.exe file is something that is being dynamically being created when the CNC4.exe file is launched/executed.

I discovered this when I initially attempted to move the file from it's location \AppsData\Local\Temp as I was theorizing that the file was corrupted. When I started CnC4, the file got recreated.

    Which explained two things:
    a. Why the file was in the AppsData\Local\TEMP folder (if it was being dynamically created in the CnC4 Program Folder, Win7 sometimes has this habit of confirming if you would like to create a file/folder if it was created under "Program Files")
    b. Why the error message states that it was incompatible. It was not really incompatible, but rather, it was a CORRUPTED executable file, which upon an attempted execution, Windows detects as an "incompatible executable" file to the current version. Additional proof was that the Error/Debug Windows stating "Unsupported 16-bit Application", and at the same time "Check your system whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program". It was incompatible either as a 16-bit, 32-bit, or 64-bit version simply because = it's corrupted.

Which led me to theorize that this file corruption can be caused by 2 things:
    a. A process was preventing the (timely?) transfer of data from... wherever...
    b. A process was preventing the proper "writing" of this data, to the file "CnC4LauncherUpdate.exe"

So, to mitigate the 2 situations above, I did the following:
    a. In my firewall/proxy/web caching/web scanning programs, I allowed the following files unlimited access to anywhere:
    ---a.1. CNC4.exe
    ---a.2. EADM.exe
    ---a.3. CnC4LauncherUpdate.exe
    b. In my proxy/firewall/web scanner programs, I excluded the EA.COM website from being filtered/scanned/cached
    c. In my file scanners (virus/trojan/shadowcopy/etc), I excluded the following folders/files from being touched/scanned
    ---c.1. CnC4 Program Folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Command & Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight)
---c.2. EA Download Manager Program Folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\EADM)
    ---c.3. CnC4LauncherUpdate.exe specifically
    d. I manually forced FULL security permissions to Administrator + my User Account to the C:\Users\(My username)\AppData\Local\Temp

After doing the above steps, I ran the game, and it worked without any issues (well, except for the mouse cursor going invisible, which was easily fixed by disabling mouse pointer trails - but this is another issue altogether).

    >>>>>> TLDR(Too Long, Didn't Read) version :

The CnC4LauncherUpdate.exe file is created on-the-fly, but during creation, it gets corrupted.

    To fix this problem:
    a. Grant Administrator + your user account FULL Permission on the AppsData\Local\Temp\ folder
    b. Exclude from your firewalls/antivirus/proxies the following:
---b.1. EA.COM = allow any program to access this domain/site without being cached/scanned
---b.2. CnC4.exe, EADM.exe, CnC4LauncherUpdate.exe = Exclude these files from being scanned by your antivirus. Allow these programs through your firewall to go anywhere, and to accept any connection
---b.3. CnC4 Folder, EA Download manager Folder = Exclude these from your antivirus/antispyware scanners
    c. Reboot, and play the game

    -------------

I believe most of the CnC4LauncherUpdate errors are due to this simple fact that the said file is being dynamically being created, and often gets corrupted during creation. I would go as far as assume that the reason this is being dynamically being created is to prevent the said launcher file from being "patched", which could lead to the game being copied (i.e. creation of pirated copies).

Please forward this suggestion to your management/development team:
    a. It is understandable why such information of how the launcher works is being held back. "Security through obscurity"? But to be honest, only script kiddies will be held back by this information. Real pirates/hackers/reverse engineers can, and already HAVE, found ways around this security measure. It produces too much problems for valid users/customers, for such an inefficient piracy mitigation function.
    b. However, it would be a good idea to let your support team know how it works, so that they would have a better understanding of the process, and can more efficiently troubleshoot Launcher errors

Hope this information would be of great help to your support team, and to your CnC4 customers.

Feel free to include in your external Knowledgebase/solutions database.

    Live Long and Prosper.
