Interesting, and worth reading.
Though...Tiberian Sun was my 2nd C&C game, I believe, and I still didn't like it. Not because it was too similar to any other game, but because it was boring and slow. Nod's cheesed out artillery didn't help either.

Cake is a lie. There is only Pudding.
Through Pudding I gain Calories.
Through Calories I gain Weight.
Through Weight I gain Girth.
Through Girth my Belt is Broken.
Dessert shall free me.
It's kind of hard to innovate something that is pretty much the same in any of the games that are under the RTS label. They all pretty much have the same formula:
- Collect resources
- Build up a base
- Build up a big enough army
- Destroy your enemy
Pretty much all the popular ones use this same formula. C&C, Starcraft, Age of Empire's, and Supreme Commander.
It's easy to innovate in the RTS genre, it's just the biggest ones don't. But there are plenty of examples that prove there's plenty of innovation to be had, such as World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, DoWII etc. Unfortunately, accessability will always overpower creativity.
yet its funny to see how many rts's actually fumble on implementing even THAT simple formula properly.... very few get it rightIt's kind of hard to innovate something that is pretty much the same in any of the games that are under the RTS label. They all pretty much have the same formula:

before rts's even think of innovation they need to get their fundamentals right, and also correct the HUGE discrepancy between common perceptions of rts gameplay and its actual gameplay

Yup. People are scared of change.
fps is the same as it was decades ago, rts games are changing all the time. but its better to create a new rts game with newer gameplay than change a game from a franchise to something new. i love the cnc gameplay so im not happy with cnc4 TT. the new EON game has no game behind so it can have any gameplay the devs want, and its gonna be like TT. Im not sure its going to be as good as gen2 or gen2 as good as old cncs but that what we are going to see

Innovation is good, but screwed innovation is worse than simply copy-paste.
Dawn of War 2/1, Company of Heroes, etc. ----> good innovation
Command & Conquer 4, Sup Com 2, etc. ----> not an innovation, it is a disquised destruction of the core gameplay (Sup Com 2 is not as bad game to be next to FnF 4, but it is the first game that I thought of).
