RA1 was really quite fun back in the day... but playing it again now (even in 3D)? It's rather been-there-done-that.

sounds to me like you're in the minority of opinion, outside of this bizarro-land board that is. See StarCraft 2, Diablo iii, COD games FIFA, NHL, Madden. Look at real life sports, Soccer, football etc...
when you nail a formula like Generals did no need to change it. I know a few in here will get their panties in a twist over the lack of innovation but the great majority of serious gamers will love a high polish on a tried and true formula and really that's all this franchise needs to get back on track.
Pinky, sorry for responding rarely, but I have easter stuff going on, and I don't have so much time right now - So, anything you'll say, you can always put my name under your post, just for the sake of numbers. :P
Awesome quoteKinda' reminds me of..
Pink, your way of thinking can be summed up like this:
A market in the city. Someone started growing pears and everyone loves them, becuse they are better and different than the old apples. Everyone loves pears and everyone starts to grow their own pears. Some people breed their own kinds of pears that are normal, there are people buying them, but they are just to simply spice pears up a little. Over time, someone finds a recipe to bake an apple pie. Apples are once again the main selling good. There are some people buying pears, but they are the smaller part of the populace. And now someone wants to give pears chance once again, because apples are stagnating and there is a big chance of getting a lot of customers. Simple marketing strategy. However, you are proposing, that we should a pear juice instead, thus neglecting all the people, which are hungry for pears.
It is not good, nor bad, but because we are going to label the boxes "pears", we should give people pears and not just pear juice.
Adridos - great point, except its not pear juice - it's some untested failure of a drink that hasnt worked in 10 years.
No matter how much you faux intellectuals want to argue the point - EA has investigated their next step, just as Blizzard did when heading into SC2, they realized going off the path of what has worked is simply a bad idea. "innovation" is a peculiar word, it does not demand wholesale changes as suggested here. There is a very delicate balance when it comes to a fast paced RTS game, you just can't throw complicated ideas into the game mechanics because it sounded cool while you were not paying attention in your 3rd period social studies class. Thankfully - EA has professionals on staff who have a clear stated goal that aligns with what Oompah, Adridos, and myself have talked about, they will most likely swat away most of the useless ideas posted here, ideas that would fundamentally change the fast paced nature of a successful RTS and lead it to failure.
His levels of insightful introspection and mystic farseering are beyond us, mere mortals.
If people are hungry for old-school and not for modern strategy, then why did the poll "Do you want cover mechanics?" was like 70% yes and 30% no, with something like 30-40 people voting? (I do not remember the exact values but this was something around it)

I cannot answer you that. There exists millions of reasons in different combinations that could cause the issue.
Some examples:
People who like how C&C is played generally rather play than comment on forums.
People like old-school, but with the fairly recent SC 2, it is partly filled.
People love some new trends in RTS games and would really want their old C&Cs to play like them.
People ...
As I said, giving people pear juice instead of normal pears is not good, but nor bad.
After playing CoH the other night, I've been partly swayed by your opinion. I've discovered that in between teching to tanks, laying mines for tanks, sniper micro, M8 Greyhound micro, flame engi rushing, I had little time for anything else. But, I realized, I had a level of engagement on a lower level in Generals with Humvee micro and such. Simple cover mechanics that still give depth to micro but are not too complex so as to detract from economy and teching, would be useful.
Such mechanics would mesh very well when combined with special unit mechanics. Like certain units get stealthed when in cover. Certain units negate cover entirely (particularly indirect fire units or snipers).
