I would like to have it like this; most units come separate, but they can be grouped together, and separated later by choice.

Individually grouped units? Do you want to be microing ants or do you want the Infantry to be as big as a tank? Can't have it both ways.

Infantry are going to have to be squads.. just to maintain the realism and user interfance.

Yes you can and it's been done before.

It will cause a mess of micromanagement. Never mind then you might as well drop the whole pretense of trying to make something modern. Modern infantry units work in squads.

Just like previous games made a mess of micromanagement. Oh wait.

ffs people go dig up the old thread and reread it before posting.

squads are fundamentally bad for a fast paced RTS. I agree with original poster - infantry should be individually created. Group them together if you want after they are produced.

... like that additional few units will cause the gpu's to melt.

Depends how many an additional few is... 10 units? 30 units? 1337 infantry spam? And the size of the squads, and a gazillion other things that could be going on in the game.

    Thanks Frish ^

if dev can make squads mechanics interesting (or at least get it right) then it should be fine, but if they cant think of anything better than what their predecessors did in C&C3 then I prefer old school individualized infantry units.
