Actually, it didn't just sink, it split into two pieces, and then exploded a few more times for good measure. After one hit. And sank in about 5 seconds.

The American destroyer had a line of explosives buried into the length of the hull, stayed afloat long enough to evacuate the crew, and sank slower than the Titanic.
Oh rule of cool and drama, I wouldn't be nitpicking about this..

Then aside from the Japanese captain and one or two members showing up intermittently throughout the film, the Japanese crew that were rescued just sort of disappeared until the end.

...Where they served as mere manual labor to move a cannon shell down the hall...
I thought the whole movie was.. Ambivalent towards the Japaneese.

From one side, it's in Peal Harbour, US and Japan soldiers are first competing and then fighting together on a single ship. On the other hand: The Japan crew seems expendable and unimportant, and the aliens (attacking Hawaii first, just like some other country before them..) seem to have a bit asian look if you ask me..

So either I am overinterpretating or the director did some double meaning stuff.

I agree, I think this is what one should think/expect at movies like these I guess.

    Two words, Michael Bay.

    ^ This

Speaking of nitpicking, there are a bunch of other stuff that can be nitpicked at. Like where are the rest of the Alien when the legless dude fought one on one with the alien? They also smashed those elevated highways for what? I forgot what movie term defines these sort of stuff that happens in movies.

Then there's the unusual neutral behavior of the aliens. For a moment I thought they were a lost fleet seeking a way to communicate home. And when they saw the super satellite thingy, they tried to use that without attacking the humans. They will only attack when threatened.

Then again from the vision that Hopper saw at the aliens eye, they can be Scouts looking for a planet to take over. And they keep themselves out of harms way in order to make a successful communication to home. But why send a Scout with a sucky communication system to begin with?

Curse you strange movie plots lol ^^ XD

Hmm I otoh thought the alien resembled a bit of Black. Just look at the one on one fight.

    Heheh, I was right about this all along ^^;

Okay, since no one mentioned it yet. Did anyone here saw the potential Battleship 2.0 game in the movie?

Not a nit pick, and not the point. The Japanese ship was a weak toy boat that sank in one hit, while the American one was a rock solid juggernaut.

It's not a complaint, just an observation. I was laughing when I saw it happen because I found it just silly, not offensive or anything.

I think I am going to see it just because it looks like a good action movie. I am just wondering one thing since it is based off the original Battleship board game is this going to be a new trend in Hollywood. If so then expect Hungry Hungry Hippos the Movie next summer.

They started it with Transformers, but I think that idea sparked from the animated series and not from the toys?

If its gonna be then I suggest these:

    Centurions
    M.A.S.K.
    Visionaries
    Thundercats

Just throwing random there, but I want Centurions the most ^^

    BATTLESHIP IS AWESOME

Best corny, unambitious fun I had in the cinema for ages! Despite my assumptions, it never takes itself too seriously, has some funny dialogue, the sea battles are not only visualy impressive, but also very engaging narration-wise.. The cliches are there, but far enough apart from eachother that they do not annoy, and actualy work to the movie's credit.

It's by no means a really good movie, but as a campy blockbuster entertainer - It's awesome. Tons of fun, as long as you do not expect anything truly ambitious or groundbreaking.
Absolutely agree. It was just an awesome Michael Bay-ish/Transformers-esque action movie. Great but you don't come out and talk about it for ages.

I see it now..." sir, the scissors are sending tanks and the paper is dropping nukes". "Send in our commando (Chuck Norris)".
