There's always gamescom to look forward to. If the game is scheduled to be out early next year, this is the last big event for gaming of the year.

I really don't know how E3 works, but couldn't they have just pumped out a little info without it having to be a big showcase thing? Look I really don't care as long as the game is still on track because I am a huge fan of Generals, but from a PR standpoint any buzz is good buzz and E3 is the easiest way to get the word out and EA is already there so... I am just a little surprised they didn't roll out a short teaser just to get interest pumped back in to the project, exploit their presence at E3 anyway, and drive more traffic to the site etc... Seemed like a no-brainer.
waiting later for a big announcement is better for PR than showing something small at a big event and people saying "is that it?"

I'd disagree - showing something small probably wouldn't have generated any negative PR or at least not as much negative PR as not showing anything and making no announcement about E3. Some small little release, even if just some concept art or an interview with a higher up would have been better than "nothing" imo
i dont buy the idea that they have nothing new to show since they last introduced it
but if they dont that is very concerning
also i thought game was coming out late 2013 not early? correct me if im wrong thanks
i imagine they have plenty of stuff ready, but enough little bits and pieces are missing to make it necessary to wait abit longer.

I think the only official word is "coming in 2013" I haven't heard early or late. I think though the speculation is late 2013 if 2013 at all (partly due to a lack of mention of Generals 2 in the financial report projections for EA for next year). No one is thinking early 2013 I don't think. But who really knows as far as we know the game is done and they are just polishing features - highly doubtful but flip a coin since no official news has been released since the reveal last december.
The key is nothing new publicly.
They would likely have tons of concept work done or in progress; they have some art as already noted. However, there's a big gap between here's X render done in the real-time render and here's unit X in full-glory gameplay (or, enough that would be presentable in the E3 keynote). When teams show things (usually talking pro or amateur, though it's more likely amateur), they are most often showing you essentially what they have to that point but make it appear there's more there than that. Anyone here that's been on a mod that adds new things kinda knows what I'm talking about. When you show that new, glorious War Factory in a still image; chances are you don't have all of the animations, damage states and the additional bits and bobs beyond what goes into tossing a piece of art into the mod. A lot of people will assume that if it's in there it must be done.
So, take the into "ingame" footage. It certainly is rendered real-time with the engine, but since they didn't show actual gameplay, you cannot assume they had gameplay. Also, since some time ago, a sleuth proved that they used a compositing application to toss on a stock VFX sparks/smoke, so it's logical to conclude they did the same in more places. With these examples, it's easy to see how they can fool many people not necessarily adept to it into thinking they have more done.
This is why it's very possible that they may not have anything "new" to show us asset wise, but they are implementing the assets they've already shown us into the actual game. But I'm sure they've got a catalog of concept art, which may not be released at all due to contractual reasons, or will come later like the RA3 unit profiles.
