    Total Recall (2012)

    Trailer:

    and

    Has anybody watched the remake? I can't believe Mars is missing in this movie.

    I used to like watching the original because it was epic and visually stunning with a clever plot that keeps me riveted for more.

    Edit: It appears this movie got bombed at the box office despite mixed ratings.

    I probably should go and see it, I liked Schwarzenegger's Total Recall.

    If you've seen the original Total Recall then you probably want to skip this one. The new Total Recall is just a more flashier special effects version and slightly different than the original. Good action and special effects but nothing to write home about.

    First remake that's actually made me angry, I just hate the way they completely change everything. Not even Mars is present in this.

    I wouldn't be bothered by this if they had a different title, because to be honest, I don't see any similarities between the two films.

    (I don't think they could've picked a worse main actor for this aswell, Colin Farrell sucks)

    Instead of using Mars, they decided to stick with Earth but if you seen the remake you would have seen the inhabitable part which they wore gas masks in.

    Colin Farrell performed well, it's just the remake didn't try to fix anything from the past film. It's just a straight remake to bring TC up to date so to speak.

    *Spoliers included.*

    Only real problem I had with this film is that of the two concurrent storylines, the first being identity-rediscovery, and the second, being the invasion of the Colony, only the former is done well. The latter is literally driven by a single line of dialogue from one character, and the audience is then left to accept that major plot point from this one line. The motivation for the invasion is also supported mainly by this one line, with little else in the film showing or convincing the audience that the motivation is even plausible. Thus the audience is given little reason to really hate the villains, and even worse, as a side effect of this, little reason to cheer the successes of the protagonist. Everything looks pretty great for both the UFB and the Colony, so no one can really believe the given explanation that there's some kind of economic crisis driving the invasion plans. The President/Minister guy doesn't even seem like that much of a bad guy until near the end of the film. He even tells the fake-wife agent to leave the protagonist alive early on.

    The meat of the story, which is the invasion, is then little more than an poorly supported excuse for spectacle. The spectacle is awesome, but the above is the reason why it doesn't become anything more than that.

    The fact that the agent lady didn't immediately kill him in the ambulance was strange, but that was a lesser issue to me than the execution of the thin plot.

    */ Spoilers*

    The effects are great, and there's about three major references to the previous version of Total Recall. Overall, I would watch it on DVD, but save the theater money.

    I think this film didn't really need it.
